Winter Deck Builds

Advantages of winter deck builds:

While it may seem unusual to build a deck during the winter months, Deck and Basement Company has perfected deck building all year long. We combine high quality materials and take advantage of the slow season to offer our customers an opportunity to save time, and money. Here, we share some of the advantages to winter deck builds:

Advantage #1: Be Ready for Spring

Your deck is ready day one when Spring hits. There’s no waiting for your deck to be built and watching the season get away from you. Building in the winter allows you and your family to enjoy your deck right away when the weather changes.

Advantage #2: Cost Savings

Because it’s unpopular to build during the winter months, the overall of the cost of the deck build is reduced. There is less demand for decking materials during the winter, resulting in more supply and reduced costs. We believe in passing this savings on to our customers.

Advantage 3: High Quality Materials

Deck and Basement has perfected winter deck We utilize specialty ground heating equipment and Diamond Piers® foundations allow us to build throughout the harshest winter conditions without compromising the integrity of the structure. We use only the highest quality materials that can be installed when the temperature drops, including Southern yellow pint which is kiln-dried and will not expand during the winter months. Azek decking ihas the least amount of expansion and contraction of the decking materials on the market today. Combined with our all-aluminum railing system, you can rest assured that if your deck is constructed in June or January, it is sure to be safe.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This popular lakeside restaurant features more than 5,000 square feet of Trex Transcend™ decking and 1,000 linear feet of UltraLox™ aluminum railing. The project completed in November 2015 just days before its opening and provides seating for 40 on the balcony and breath-taking views of the lake.

In order to meet ADA requirements with the existing site elevations, the design of the accessible ramp required four direction changes and is over 120 feet long. The upper deck includes a membrane system to allow dining, bar and TV-viewing areas to remain operational during rain or shine. The lower deck, which is built 18 feet over the lakeshore, presented design challenges. Existing 18-foot deep pylon footings had to be re-used as new footings were not permitted. The solution: 26’ long, 6”x18’ treated laminated beams were secured to the existing pylons which corrected imperfections of the old foundation and leveled the deck surfaces. All fascia and post wraps feature James Hardie cement board. Cedar tongue and groove finish the bottom of the membrane deck. Due to its popularity as an evening hangout on the lake, nearly 100 LED rail post lamps were used to guide boaters to the restaurant.

Our Unique Pre-Finishing Process for Decks and Porches

A top quality cedar deck begins with top quality cedar wood. We use only premium grade kiln dried cedar lumber for our decks. This allows us to eliminate the typical cedar deck "weathering" process, which consists of allowing the lumber to reach proper moisture content to accept stain.

The "weathering" myth

Most builders will tell you to let your cedar deck "weather" for a few months, then get it stained. However, within one month of installation an un-protected cedar deck will begin to fade and grey, clog with dirt and pollen, and crack and twist due to escaping moisture. The reason most people have trouble keeping their cedar decks looking good is because of the damage the weathering process did in the first few months.

Our revolutionary pre-finishing process

To avoid this problem, we developed a specialized process that involves sanding every inch of your cedar and applying the best available stain/seal under the most ideal conditions. By applying high quality stain/seal to freshly sanded wood that is untouched by the elements, we produce what we feel is the best possible cedar finish to protect your investment. Our process protects where others cannot: between the boards and in the cracks. It also dramatically reduces the cost and frequency of re-stains in the future. Because our prefinished cedar is protected from the elements from the first day it is exposed to them, your stain will always be easier to re-coat than the site-applied coatings.

Maintaining and protecting your stain and your investment

Our re-stain team will contact you when your deck is due to be re-finished. A representative will come out and do a complete assessment of the condition of your deck and quote you a fair price. Have peace of mind in knowing that our professionals will protect and keep your deck looking its best to maximize your investment and your deck's longevity.
